Vice President: Tony Zeak
Tony is the Project Safety Representative for Ivey’s Construction, Inc. on their Constellation
Program contract at KSC. As an AISC Certified Advanced Steel Erector, Ivey’s is responsible for the
fabrication, assembly, and erection of the Ares Crew Launch Vehicle Mobile Launch Tower and the
Launch Mount Structures for Launch Complex 39.
In 1977 Tony got his start in the nuclear power heavy construction industry as an ANSI N45.2.6
Level II Inspector. The power plants he worked averaged a fatality each year during the
construction phase and that experience shaped his interest in occupational safety. Tony began his
safety career in 1987 as a National Safety Council Instructor for the Florida Safety Council. When
the Florida Safety Council established their Occupational Safety Division in 1990 he was a DHSMV
and FL. DOT instructor trainer and actively promoted the Safety Council’s programs to the public
and private sector employers of Brevard County. As an Occupational Safety Specialist for the
Safety Council he performed site hazard assessments and assisted his clients with their safety
program development, implementation, and personnel training. As an Instructor Trainer he taught
train-the-trainer classes on site and at BCC to enable small employers to train their own
employees. As his scope of work grew he also assisted his clients with their compliance issues
regarding CFR 29, 30, 40, & 49, leaving him with a multi-jurisdictional foundation in safety.
Secretary: George Cole
George Cole, CSP, is a NASA Space Shuttle Safety Specialist. George primarily works in the
Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) providing safety oversight for stacking Solid Rocket Boosters,
attaching the External Tank and mating the Space Shuttle orbiter to the stack. He also works all of
the Space Shuttle back-shop areas, and launch pad support. George previously worked for several
space-launch contractors providing safety support to Titan, Atlas, Delta, and other space-flight
systems. George retired from a career as an Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician.
He has Master of Science Degrees from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (E-RAU) in
Aviation/Aerospace Safety Systems and Management. George completed undergraduate work
earning a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Central Florida in Engineering
Technology, plus holds 2 Associate of Arts Degrees. George is also an Associate Adjunct
Professor teaching post-graduate and undergraduate classes for E-RAU, including
Aviation/Aerospace Safety, Systems Safety in Aviation, Human Factors in Aviation Safety, Safety
Program Management, Aircraft Crash Investigation, Aircraft Crash & Emergency Management, and
more.
George has been a Professional Member of ASSE since 1997. He served as the Cape Canaveral
Chapter President from 2002-2004 and Vice-President from 2000-2002.
Treasurer: Steve Phillips
Steve Phillips, CSP, is a graduate of Regis University with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Management, and an
Associate in Industrial Safety Technology. He has 32 years experience in the field of Aero Space
and Occupational Safety with the Air Force; Lockheed, Shuttle Program; McDonnell Douglas,
Satellite processing support, Boeing Delta Launch Support, and SRS Technologies. He is the Safety
Manager for the Office of Space Launch at Canaveral AFS, Florida.
Steve has been a member of the Cape Canaveral Chapter since 1989. He has served as Vice
President, President, and is the current Treasurer. In addition, he is a professional member of
ASSE and an active member of the executive committee, participates in special projects to help
develop professional growth of the membership, and assistant web master for the chapter web
page.
Chapter Delegate: Tom Griffin
Tom Griffin is a Safety Specialist with The Boeing Company, Checkout, Assembly and Payload
Processing/Spacecraft Services at the Space Station Processing Facility, Kennedy Space Center,
Florida. Tom provides safety oversight for all International Space Station (ISS) flight hardware
checkout, assembly and payload processing, including NASA spacecraft processing for unmanned
launch missions on Atlas and Delta launch vehicles. Previous employment includes: Industrial
Hygiene & Safety Specialist with Boeing Delta II & IV launch vehicles, Cape Canaveral Air Force
Station (CCAFS), Florida, complexes 17 & 37 and Vandenberg AFB, California, complexes SLC-2 &
SLC-6; Senior Safety Engineer with Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Titan Launch
Operations, CCAFS, Florida, complexes 40 & 41 and Vandenberg AFB, California, complexes SLC-
4E & SLC-4W; Pad Safety Supervisor with Pan Am/Johnson Controls World Services, CCAFS,
Florida, providing Range Safety coverage for Shuttle, Titan, Atlas, and Delta space launch vehicles,
as well as Navy MK48 torpedoes, Asrock, Subrock, Poseidon, and Trident missiles; and Adjunct
Instructor for the Department of Energy, Sandia National Laboratories, Central Training Academy,
Albuquerque, New Mexico, teaching Innovative Explosive Devices, Improvised Explosive Devices,
and Improvised Nuclear Devices. Tom retired from a 21 year career in the U.S. Air Force as an
Explosive Ordnance Disposal Manager/Technician. He has a Master of Science degree from Embry-
Riddle Aeronautical University and a Bachelor of Science from Southern Illinois University-
Carbondale. Tom has been a Professional Member of ASSE since November 1994. He has served
the Cape Canaveral Chapter as Awards & Honors Chairperson 2000 to 2002, Vice President 2002
to 2004, President 2004 to 2006 and is the current Chapter Delegate and Membership Chairperson.
